Very well put Doyle. I cannot think of one who would have left the Union had they truly believed they were committing treason. Some may have become disillusioned with the way the military was going and some were out of the military at that time. What made them go along with a decision that some now may view as radical (but then it wasn't that far removed from other wars) and go with the South? Each had their own reason. I believe most if not all were torn, had to have thought long and hard and went where they believed they should. It wasn't an easy decision for any.
