Re: Tennessee Confederates
In Response To: Re: Tennessee Confederates ()

I have never heard mention by word of mouth of the Confederate soldiers in my family tree on either family side and had to discover all of them on my own. I wonder now, as a middle aged adult, why.

In one case one of my paternal gg grandfathers deserted from the 32nd TN with no record of return to his unit, so this could be a reason for not mentioning him. There are others however that served honorably as far as I know and no one seems to have cared enough to even learn about them.

There were many deserters in the Army of Tennessee, especially later in the war. I suspect many didn't mention being a veteran for that reason alone. My gg grandfather did say in the 1910 census he was a survivor of the Confederate Army. For those who don't know this, the question of whether a male citizen was a survivor of the Confederate or Union Army was supposed to have been asked on the 1910 Federal Census and is another way to find a veteran of the war in one's family tree.

Just my two cents worth as an occasional poster.
