I think Pam is correct in her thought. When I was sworn into the Navy we pledged to defend the Constitution, as in Chief Upton's post. During later instruction we were taught the importance of the flag as a symbol. In battle, the flag would be present at some point. Though not carried in the forefront as in the past, it was the visible or remembered symbol of what were were fighting for. Hence the emotion raised by someone burning it. I'm afraid my reaction to such a sight would be free speech to their nose. Stan
