"Lost Cause"

So that I don't highjack Jim thread below I have a question that I am posting on a new thread.

What was the "Lost Cause"?

To a Southerner this would mean one thing, such as Freedom, Independence, the right of Self determination and the Rule of law over governments and people.

But, to a Unionist I would suspect that it would probably mean something else. Since their position would be the "Won Cause". What did they "win"? I am sure that they would dispute the southern states Right of Secession (Raule's Textbook) and Slavery Under the Constitution (Article 4, US Constitution)

If the Southern view of the "Lost Cause" is the correct interpretation then is their Cause truely lost? Should we give up the fight for such ideals as the rule of Law over Government and call it "Lost"?

Don't get me wrong here. I am talking about much deeper fundamental ideals here than whether or not a person should own slaves or not. My question go to the very bedrock of the foundations of this country.
