Re: Stephens Cornerstone speech

"...he was left with more questions than answers"

I think all believers feel that way. You can put what I understand of God's plan in a thimble yet you couldn't stuff my questions into a oil tanker. As Paul stated, we see darkly, as through a glass.

I wish all the Lincoln supporters to understand something about how I feel in my perceptions of the man. I do not in any way delight in the man's faults or failures. I grew up being taught that Lincoln was a great and honorable man who had the misfortune to be President when our people were in their worst of times and circumstances. That while he may have had faults and done bad things that his intentions were always the purest.

My friend, I would jump for joy if I could still see the man only in that light. Yet, in my studies, brief as they are, I have learned things about the man that I find, to say the least, I feel uncomfortable about. Please know also it is not just Lincoln I feel this way about but every leader and hero our country has ever had.

This may be a dumb question to ask of you but have you ever seen D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation? The film is to me a treasure. Not because of any moral or immoral statements. It is because it is a time capsule of how Americans perceived the war, reconstruction and yes, even Lincoln.

The same writer that showed his views on the KKK to be very positive also showed his respect of Lincoln. Do you remember the scene where Lincoln was described as the "Great Heart"?. It seems now that folks on both sides of this issue have now changed their positions. Maybe saying changed their perceptions is a better way of saying it?
