IMHO, Paine was incorrect here. There are a couple of sources, probably true, about Union troops finding the body of a black Confederate after the battle. I have speculated in my essay on black Louisiana Confederates that he might have been a member of the company of free blacks that formed in Baton Rouge and then broke up when the town fell in May 1862. A single individual does not make a "corps."
