A New Bobby Horton Email with a Forrest Connection

Just got this one from Bobby,

Dear Dennis,

I do believe this tune is a "period" piece. It is also known as "I Can Whip The Scoundrel." Since Baldwyn is near the site of Brice's Crossroads in Mississippi -- I assumed Abner would be a person in Forrest's command.

I will try to find my source material that I worked with when I did CSA 3 and will let you know.

Tennessee Ernie did record this one -- if memory serves me the others on the album were "period" tunes.

Kindest Regards,

Bobby

I Googled, "I Can Whip the Scoundrel" and came found this interesting site,

http://mail.gorham.k12.me.us/~janelleg@gorhamschools.org/I%20can%20whip%20the%20scoundrel.html

(You will have to past the entire address into IE to get it to work)

Where it is stated that "It's unknown who Abner was."

Yet, Bobby places Baldwyn near the site of Brice's Crossroads and feels that Abner might have been in Forrest's command

Checking a Mississippi map tells me that Baldwyn (with a "wyn) sits almost on top of Brices Crossroads National Battlefield Site up in northeast Mississippi.

Next, do any of you happen to have muster rolls for Forrest's command near the time of his Brice's Crossroads engagement (June 10, 1864)?

If so, might you be able to see if there is among Forrest's troopers an "Abner?"

Sounds to me like Bobby Horton knows his CW stuff.
