Communication lines...that was what Grant was looking at.

The RR to Vicksburg was an important military target, to cut off a big line of communication with the rest of the Confederacy.

Grant was working to keep other Confederate forces from linking up and reinforcing Pemberton. With Banks at Port Hudson area, troops from there could not move to connect with the Vicksburg troops, and vice-versa.
