Stanley was a reluctant enlistee of the 6th Arkansas Infantry and only enlisted when the ladies of the community made fun of his reluntance to enlist in 1861 by sending him a dress to wear. He was "taken" prisoner during the Battle of Shiloh.

Stanletville in the Belgium Congo was named in his honor and at that time a 20' bronze statue of him stood in the city square in his honor. I assume that the statue has long since gone the way of the Dodo and been melted down for the metals.
