Re: Slashed Timber
In Response To: Re: Slashed Timber ()

David and Frank,

The reason I'm asking is I had an ancestor, A. H. G. (Alston Hunter Green) Howell in the 5th Georgia Infantry. This unit lost 55% of its number at Chickamauga, most of these losses in the cleared area north of the Brotherton Road and Brock Field. In certain books about the battle, I've read that the area north of Brock Field was "slashed timber". I've never known if this was a description of the cleared area shown on the attached map (Sep 19, 1863; 1:00 PM) north of the Brotherton Road or the area shown as trees north of the Brotherton Road and the cleared area. I probably need to contact Lee White or Jim Ogden at Chick-Chatt park, but I thought maybe you guys might know.

Jim
