Herb,
I just finished reading a book titled Dixie Betrayed the subtitle being How the south lost the war by a man named Eicher. I think his first name is David. I have the book loaned out right now so I am guessing at the first name of the author. His contention was that the problems were due to the fact of "State Rights" and the fact that the south was never in union in terms of waging the war. He seems to think that the priciples in the central government and the various state governments were so focused inward that the Confederacy had to fight with one hand behind their back for the most part. He has lots of notes supporting his contention. I have not checked all of them out, but the ones I have seem to hold up his contentions.
