The fact is in that area he would have had some "shirt-tailed" relatives that were Unionist. Many Killians were. However, yes, you are right... his direct line did fight for the Confederacy. His g-grandfather was one Curtis Gill, he belonged to the 3rd. TN Mounted Infantry CSA...Lillards lads. (Note to George Martin, that ones for you. I know those boys take in your area of interest, of course you probably already knew it, lol.) Gill's daughter also married a man who's people had fought for the South.
