My ancestor in Md....and I read.....!

Hello all,
As for Maryland: My gr gr grandfather in Charles County, Maryland was Judge Thomas Baker Berry. My grandmother always said he owned hundreds of slaves (an exajuration that time lent the tale) and nearly lost everything because of the war, that he lost his slaves and his tobacco farm/plantation all but collapsedlost a heap of land, etc.. So I don't think slavery continued after the war in Maryland. Remember that early, before the war actually started I think, Lincoln supended the Writ of Habeas Corpus, disbanded the Maryland Militia, declared Martial Law in that state because they were considering suceeding and had the Maryland legislature arrrested and put pro-northern lackies in their place. He appointed Gen. Butler as Military Governor. Butler put out a decree that if any Marylander help the Southern Cause in any way whether it be fight for them, send anything in the way of clothing, goods, wpns, etc, that they lands and fortunes would be forfeit to the government. I don't know how much of that threat he carried through with, but I do know that my own ancestors in Maryland, Edelens, Berrys, Middletons, and Montgomerys, all suffered and lost much from what I have been told. BTW, according to the 1860 census records my Berry ancestor only owned like 25 or 30 slaves, not hundred as my grandmother believed. I am not proud of an ancestor owning slaves, but that is just history.

But Delaware and Kentucky are another matter: One time I read an article I think written by a black professor at a Mississippi college or university. He was talking all about what y'all have been discussin. All I remember about it that sticks with me is that he said that Kentucky and Delaware had legal slavery continue for two years after the war ended. I suppose that was a gift from the subjugators for them staying in the union. I can't remember if he said anything about any other states. Just thought you would find that interesting.

I don't think much the yankees did was legal. Read "Was the South Right?" The Emancipation Proclomation was plain and simple a tool to make the war look like a freedom crusade and more than anything to make England and France back up and say, "Wow, now it will look like we are helping keep slavery alive and enforcing slavery. So now we had better not help the South!"
