Jim.......you may be experiencing the NPS Syndrome. I was at Sharpsburg Battlefield a couple of years ago and the park ranger was outside of the visitors center expounding on the events in Maryland to a flock of mostly high school aged folks and some adults that appeared to know little about the battle there or the war in general. This ranger stated that Lee ventured into Maryland after a "resounding defeat during The Seven Days" (his actual words). He then went on to tell how Lee was an inferior commander with a habit of dividing his army and placing it in peril. I had to walk away. Looking back at the many sites I've visited, I can't think of many instances where the "expert" concluded that any particular engagement was a Confederate victory. The phrase that always seems to pop up is "the results of the battle were inconclusive". There sure were a lot of "inconclusive" Federal casualties during the war. Just my observation.
