"Had it been a fully loaded .58 or .62, being hit in the shoulder should have been a very serious wound; and had it hit bone, there wouldn't have been much left of that shoulder."

Chief, that just about perfectly describes what happend to Uncle Frank at Spottsylvania in May, 1864. He was hit in the front of the left shoulder; the Minie' ball breking his shoulder blade, ranging down his back and exiting near his lower spine. The wound was severe enough he was at home recuperating in July, when he was captured and sent to Camp Douglas. He said in his pension application that his suffering there gave him rheumatism, and caused him to pretty much lose the use of his left arm.

You have published a large group picture of troops at Camp Douglas. The picture appears in the January 2009 edition of "America's Civil War", page 42-43. In the left front of the picture is a group of three men; on the left is a man in a poncho, center is one in a longish dark coat; on the right is a man holding his hat in his left hand. His left arm is bent strangely, and seems smaller than the right. It looks weak. The lower sleeve appears to have a kind of hash mark on it. I wonder if it could possibly be Uncle Frank. I gueass there's no way to tell. Stan
