By the way, if the pencil note on the CDV is hard to read, it says Capt. Geo. C. Randall Co. F, 2nd Vt Inf, killed in action May 5, 1864.
In an earlier message string, Vermont historian Tom Ledoux mentioned that Vermont's greatest contributions and sacrifices were post-Gettysburg, at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, etc. Capt. Randall puts a human face on what something like that costs.
