I believe that the word is also the origin of the term "to peter out" because the petard fuses were also known to malfunction at the wrong time. Basically the petard was a suicide device because the either the petard crew were cut down trying to place the weapon, the weapon prematurely exploded or the fuse went out, causing the petard crew to have to relight the weapon.
