I think that Lincoln's writing ability and skill at formulating words into memorable text is what drowns out his actions and what he was actually saying. Never mind that as president, many of the works of Lincoln were the works of his secretary. For some reason Lincoln's works of written English are what make him a political saint and given him the prestige of the "greatest president" by many. Take away the Shakespearian value of the man and you have someone equal to a modern president I won't mention.
