620,000 dead Americans mean everything to those who once had living memories of the CW. Once the living memory departs, I think those who are left with only 2nd hand knowledge, even if it was learned from those with 1st hand knowldege, come closer and closer to caring less and less - except for most if not all on this board and other similar venues where the memory continues to live, if not flourish, by having been passed down over the generations.
My kids, grandkids and great grandkids (2 now) could care less about my great Uncle who was gassed by the Germans where the poppies grow today - that despite my having shared his correspondance, postmarked France, with each and every one of them.
