Re: Forced Consent

"the suppression of civil liberties to some four million blacks in the American South".

So that justifies the suppression of the liberties of 12,000,000 southerner. Is that right? Being right doesn't justify you to do wrong.

The fact is that the founders of this country were smart enough to leave "Morality issues" to the States to decide for themselves and several of them did. In the 1800's there was no such thing as "Civil Liberties" that is 20th Century thinking.

Discrimination was a fact of life among several ethic groups and not limited to just blacks, and not all white were equal either. Life was hard and sometime brutal, ask any pioneer living on the frontier were death was a day to day matter. In some cases the slave would have been lucky to have someone to care about him to feed him when he was hunger and tend him when he was sick because he was valuable to someone. There were a lot of people in the 1800's who died because they were no value to any one in particular.

Slavery among European settlers in America, existed for 236 years before there ever was a Confederate States of America. We don't know how long slavery existed among the native americans before the Europeans came here. Slavery among the white stated as a NORTHERN business enterprise with the Dutch in New York and when that busines became unprofitable to them, then they "Got Religion". Yeah right. The reason why a slavery clause was even in the United States Constitution was because of the need for slaves to work the wharfs and docks in New York harbor and New Jersey. Where was the Moral indignation against the practise of slavery then?

The fact is that New York and New Jersey were necessary to the formation of the United States in 1789, because without their ratification of the Constitution the new nation would be divided into two parts and would fail. Therefore Slavery was more a factor in the forming of the United States, than it ever was in the forming of the Confederacy.
