I believe what point is missing is that the United States traded one form or slavery for another to boost its economic standing into the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Jamestown, the first successful English colony, to make it successful, was settled by mostly indentured servants and later pirated slaves destined for Mexico. American freedom, in its traditional sense, is based on native traditions not European, and is even today a very hard and elusive form of life style. Now, into the 21st Century, many American are not really free. I think we can all agree on that.
