A more fundamental question here is, Why should only the patriotic pay the price in the fight for freedom that everyone will enjoy? The same question can be asked by the men and women of our volunteer army today. I think that is our problem today with our country. It cost most people nothing to enjoy it benifits.

True in 1862 it was amatter of survival for the Confederacy, and it is true that in a true republic form of government there were Governors who did oppose such edicts from a central government. The beauty of a republic is that Governors could do that.
