Doyle, I just remembered reading somewhere that the tit-for-tat retaliation that marked Steele's Camden Expedition went back even further. Some of the Indian and Texas troops that were involved at Poison Springs had a bone to pick with the 1st Kansas Colored Regiment for something that happened earlier in the Indian Territory. My aging memory is drawing a blank on the specifics, but I recall reading that the Poison Springs massacre may have had more to do with retaliation than with simple racism.
