Re: "Traitors"
In Response To: Re: "Traitors" ()

The information in the last two paragraphs is drawn from it, but not directly quoted. Obviously the book is more detailed and appears to have pretty thorough footnotes. It covers the whole seige, not just the Battery Wagner assault. What I found particularly interesting was the part about the trial. I had never heard of that before and it seems rather amazing that the defendants appear to have gotten a very fair trial in the face of what had to have been some very strong local emotions - the book also references the rhetoric coming from local media like the Charleston Mercury at the time. Beauregard is to be commended for his efforts at due process - it sounds as though he was a realist when it came to dealing with this new aspect of the war.

As others noted below, there are discrepencies between the Luck, Hagood and Harrison accounts, all of which are further clouded by propaganda and the mists of time. As for whether the Shaw family really was pleased with not being able to bury their son themselves or whether they were just putting a brave face on a bad situation, we will probably never know.
