States Rights

I just finished reading Doyle's excellent post to Byran on the CBF question. Hoping not to step on someone's thread, I noticed the following part of Doyle's post

"Especially since I met Orval Faubus many years afterward before he died and found him to be a devout States Rights supporter"

I remember Gov. Faubus and I recall that incident that most people remember from that time. My question is, based on the number of posts that we have had over the years where "States Rights" is mentioned, what part of the failure of the effort to create another National State in the Southeastern US did this "States Right's" play? Did it doom the experiment from the beginning perhaps?
