Re: Army of Northern Virginia

Thank you gentlemen.

What has prompted my question is my study of Robert Rodes and the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Robert Rodes, a Virginian living in Alabama at the start of the war, was initially elected Colonel of the 5th Alabama. By October 1861, he had been appointed Brigadier General. Not that he wasn't capable or deserving, but after the re-enlistment of the "12 month volunteers" and the subsequent regimental elections, another Virginian, Eugene Blackford, was elected Major of the 5th Alabama.

According to Fred Ray's excellent book, "Shock Troops of the Confederacy", Robert Rodes appointed this Major from Virginia to an quasi-independent command much to the chagrin of the other officers of the 5th Alabama. Blackford, again a capable field commander, seemed to flourish in the ANV untill the death of Robert Rodes at Winchester in September 1864. Within a month of that event, Blackford was brought up on charges of "Misbehavior Before the Enemy". He was courtmartialed in November 1864 and dismissed from the Army. However, after appealing to President Jefferson Davis, his sentence was remitted in February 1865.

Are there other examples of Virginians superseding other capable officers in non Virginia units?
