There were, in fact, laws prohibiting the manumission of slaves by their owners in at least some of the Southern states. But before you Yankees get too uppity about it, be aware that had those laws not been in effect, your states had laws that would have prohibited those freed slaves from entering into your territory.
So maybe we need to rein in some of those high horses that some of us are so prompt to hop up on.
