I don't know entirely about that statement. Those that had the skills could make it somewhere. But most slaves didn't have the skills to live outside the plantation system.
Second, most of the slaves didn't have a bad life on the plantation. Most of Jefferson Davis' slaves returned to his plantation after the war, and there are many accounts in the slave naratives which lamented the life they lead while slaves.
