Had all the money that was spent on prosecuting the war against the southern states been spent on the recolonization program, it would have been well funded. I read somewhere that the war cost the Union $2,000,000 a day for the entire war. Compared to the daily revenue at that time was $650,000 a day. I think the total cost of sending all the slaves that went back to Liberia under the recolonization program was only about one and a half days worth of the war debt.
