There's been a lot of history written about southern Illinois, but probably not one individual book which would include all of the history in this area.
I don't guess I know the man who did the history of the 90th IL. When I work with the S.I.U. people, it's the ones at Carbondale. Usually in the summer for the Summer preservation program.
Bob Swenson, who teaches there, presented a program on the steamboats built here at Springfield last Oct. I couldn't make the trip with him, but I did help with their research. We're working now on including bios and stories about the actual men who built them. Some of them were gov. employees at St. Louis working on the gunboats. They came here in 1864 to start their own shipyards. He is supposed (actually "we") to give another program in March at Decatur for the State Historical Society. I love the research part, but hate public speaking. Maybe you'll get a chance to attend.
Let me know when the 90th book is published.
Thanks,
Ann
