Are Catholics Christian? Are Jehovah's Witnesses? Are Mormons? Are Scientologists? How about the Amish? Christian Scientists? How about 'Christian' churches like those of Jim Jones, and David Koresh?
Where do we draw the line? Are people who believe in evolution truly Christian? How about Christian demoninations who ordain women as priests, and those that recognize gay marriage, and gay bishops, shall they join the list of approved Christian demoninations or not? How about the KKK and their Christian crosses, can they declare themselves a religion, with a new prophet, and begin their activities anew, this time completely sanctioned and supported by the local and state government?
Can the individual states under your Constitution then determine what religious practices, or what church demoninations of "christianity" are approved, or not approved? Evangelical snake-handlers? New Christian denominations have sprung up with regularity throughout history, will we have a board of some kind, or a cabinet post, "Secretary of Dogma" approve new denominations as appropriately "christian"? Or shall the majority in each State vote what is properly religious and acceptable? can Utah ban all non-Mormon religious schools?
Shall general education taxes, paid by all citizens, even those of non-christian religions, pay for home schooling in these "approved christian" church schools? Would these same state taxes, collected equally from Christians, and Hindus and Moslems and Jews and atheists, pay for the private schools of Jews, or Hindus or Muslems, or atheists or any other "non-Christian" school, or would these non-Christian groups be exempt from taxes?
Or shall we scrap public education completely and the taxes that support it altogether, leaving education solely and completely up to the parents to choose or not choose? I mean what right does a government have to demand anyone be educated, anyway? If government does have a right to expect an education, does it not have a right to set the standards? Where is the line to be drawn in this new Constitutional era?
I wonder how American students would perform globally after a decade or two if we became only a society of a myriad number of private segregated religious 'madrasses', some narrowly fundamentalist Christian, some narrowly fundamentalist Muslim, some narrowly fundamentalist Hebrew etc, all pretty much like those schools in Afghanistan, the kids uniformly bobbing their heads in time to the memorized narrow teachings of their local cleric, a cleric who teaches only one narrow brand of local religion, and only one narrow brand of locally approved history, and only one narrow brand of locally approved science?
What a wonderful country that would be, eh! The American dream?
