"The fact that the preception in the South was, in 1860, that Mr. Lincoln, and his cabinet, and thereby the government of the United States, would not honor that "Contract", WAS the greatest issue which caused South Carolina to seceed."
TR,
That goes back to an earlier statement, the south, or at least South Carolina at that point in time was not using any logic or reason, they were operating on emotion. What evidence did they have that anything was going to change other than what they imagined? I remember reading in Mary Chestnuts book Dixie Diary about her returning from a trip somewhere and there was a ruckus on the train. Seems someone was returning from New York and he had news that Lincoln had won the election and the general opinion on the train was if Lincoln and the Black Republicans are in the White House, it is time to seceed. Kind of reminds me of where we are now. My man did not win the most recent election. I have heard many voices complain about how things will be under the new man. Well, I did not vote for him, but in a few days he will be my President whether I like it or not. So I must adopt a wait and see attitude. That is the American way in my mind.
