"Secession, at least in the deep South, was mostly about slavery,"...I have a problem with this because, I know the feelings intensly went towards independance from the United States as the primary basis for the movement and it happened very quickly. Especially in Southern Alabama where economically, unless you owned a large plantation of cotton, your basis of life was based around water transportation, raw materials or mills. The newspapers of Mobile, Alabama were some of the first calling for using slaves in the military, arguing that the war was not about keeping slaves but forming their own government. Just like today polling, popular feelings flowed and changed as events happened.
