Dixiecrat Democrats
In Response To: Re: A New Constitution ()

Pam and David,

Don't forget Vice President Henry Wallace, vice President under FDR until Roosevelt dumped him for his radical Communist views in favor of Truman. It was he who founded the "Progressive" wing of the Democrat Party. You hear them use that term quite openly now days. The Progressive Democrat candidate for President in 1948 was an independent, and caused a split in the Democrat party in the 1948 election, which almost elected Dewey (the Republican) as President. This is why Truman's win in the '48 election was such a stunner and may have been rigged. This "progressive movement" within the Democrat party caused the southern Democrats to form the Dixiecrat Democrats wing of the party. You know how "Racist" we southerners are down here don't you? The Dixiecrats had nothing to do with racism. But, that is how the Dixiecrats democrats were framed in the '50's and '60's and still are protrayed today to discredit them and conservatives politically. It is an effective political tool and still is being used on us this very hour.

Anyway back to my subject. This split in the idealogy of the Democrat party gave the Republicans the White House in 1952 and 1956, in the form of Dwight Eisenhower. Who was most famous for his Golfing, and sending United States Troops to the South in violation of our Constitution. Many of the "progressive Democrats", mainly made up of Northeastern states Democrats, sided politically at this time with the Republicans in Congress to destroy the influence of the Southern Dixiecrat Democrats with the Civil Rights movement, which strangely was only in the South and not the northeast where racism still abounds today.

This is the reason why I don't demonize such men as Orval Faubus and George Wallace. There was much more going on there than "Equal Education" and "Civil Rights", and the southern Dixie Democrats knew that. But they were fighting with one hand tied behind their back. They could not go public with what was going on behind the scenes, because of their precieved Party Loyality.

THEN following all of this, we have yours and Pam's senerios of when the South "Changed" that follow this picture of political intrege. The South has never "changed". The world has "Changed" around it. It has always been consistant in its conservatism and American ideals. I am still an American Party Independence as far as my political beliefs go. I just wish more people would study history and not be so quick to judge history. To find out what became of Americanism, and what being an American is. Not be simply just being a Democrat, or a Republican. That is so shallow and so misleading to have all of our American Ideals lumped into the coattails of either corrupt political party.
