"Frank, if I recall correctly, the book you're referring to is "A Rebel War Clerk's Diary" by J. B. Jones?"
Bryan,
The book I refered our new friend to was actually Bitterly Divided by Professor David Williams from Valdosta State University in Vladosta,Ga. He grew up in Miller County georgia and earned his PhD at Auburn University. He provides copious notes to support his assertions and I checked many of them out and I can't find anything wrong. Other books that he has written are A Peoples Hisotry of the Civil War,Plain Folk in a Rich Mans War and a few others that I can't recall at this moment. Another one that I think is good in regards to the disfunctionalism that existed in the Confederate government in my opinion is Dixie Betrayed by David Eicher. He is from the north (Wisconson), but a lot of what he says, I have read in other places.
as for A Rebel War CLerks Diary, that is probably the first one on the subject that I ever read. I have it somewhere here in the mess, that I call home. He dealt a lot with the inflation that existed, the food shortage, the number of "southern" folk that at the end were trying to get out with their gains before the end came. That is one great book. I don't want to appear to always pick on the south, but they had their problems and they are not all caused by the north. The north had problems also but they were big enough and had adequate resourses to over come the things that they messed up. The south could not, since they were resourse deficient.
I should more properly post this on the book page I guess.
