Everybody looks for a scapegoat. And I suppose that if someone had to fall on the sword after the south's defeat I suppose that Davis and the Confederate Government was as good as any. Yes Davis was, in some ways, an idiot in his meddling with the military and his choice of generals like Bragg and others and probably could have changed some facite of the situation. But it is like Sec. of Defence Donald Rumsfeld said 'You fight a war with the Army (and I suppose the government) you have'. Remember the flap at the time Rumfeld made that statement about the unarmored Humvee's in Iraq. The Humvee was never designed to be armored, so whose fault was that? The Humvee was designed for a different war, at a different place, and for different time. Much like the Confederate Government was when it was formed in 1861.
Everything and especially all of the mistakes are so crystal clear AFTER the War. The South wasn't prepared for war when it came to them in 1861 and I think the Confederate government, for the most part, did an outstanding job on the whole of staying in the war for 12 months let alone over 4 years given what they started out with. Were there breakdowns and mistakes made? Yes there is no question in that. But what government hasn't. They did far better than most "slap together" governments have done in the past and I would bet better than a thrown together government could do even today under the same circumstances.
For that matter of fact it doesn't even have to be a 'thrown together government". Wasn't it just a couple of years ago that our present Congress was going to vote to cut off funding for our troops?
