I terms of the cotton market, they really "shot" themselves in the foot. Forced England to go forward with a plan that they had to develop cotton as a crop in Egypt and India with great results. Then they "controlled" their cotton prices. Any time you can control what you are paying for product, that forces your vendors to sharpen their pencils.
