Re: Who is responsible?

Maybe I wasn't clear on my question, somehow that doens't seem to be quite the right answer and it leaves me with more questions. Did Grant have anything to to do with saving the records of the Confederacy? This one person claims Grant told his generals not to burn in records. Was this in a general order? If so how and what records did Genl. Johnston post guard on? Below is the statement I would like to address with name removed

"-------, if it had not been for General Grant, we would not have a single piece of CSA records. When his generals wanted to burn all the records of the Southern States, he immediately gave the order that nothing was to be touched nor destroyed and to return everything to each state."

Somehow I am just not to sure of the above statement. Now I recall that Jackson, Mississippi was burned by Grant, so did he remove all documents first? Did Grant relly think ahead and save these records from mass destruction for us?
