Re: Words of wisdom from the past

George, my recently deceased father in law was the son of such a coal miner, in eastern Kentucky. He came from West Virginia originally and died of black lung. He could have been any one of those men pictured. My FiL enlisted in the Navy in 1944, upon his high school graduation. He fought at Okinawa, as trigger man on a 40mm AA gun on LST 17. When he came home to Kentucky, he had some more good luck. My Mother in Law came to teach school for a year. They fell in love, but when he asked her to marry him, she said yes, but... He had to leave Kentucky and move back to Georgia with her. He became an oil executive and they were married for 61 years. The luck continued, as my wife was thus born in Georgia, and not in Kentucky. Nine months and one week after the marriage! Her mother always specified that week. LOL
BTW, I guess you know those mules and hinnies never saw the light of day. The miners and their families lived in company houses, in company towns, and shopped in company stores, using company script. They were in effect economic slaves. (Since some of the photo captions were in foreign languages, I'd guess the slide show was put together by a visiting European tourist.) Stan
