I have read comments from those who served on the dreaded Slave patrols prior to the War. What they didn't like was having to stand and check passes of hundreds of slaves going here and there between plantations, many had attitudes and would make comments to the patrol. I imagine that many slaves were spoiled or pampered by their owners, and according to the social standing of the owner, the slaves would feel they had more leeway in dealing with those whites lower on the station scale.
