Northern Disunionist

"The abolitionists, the Northern disunionists, are a greater obstacle to the restoration of the Union, than all thearmies of the rebels. The most indecent rebel of the South is not in the habit of using such coarse and abusive language in relation to the Constitution, to the Union, to our Generals, and to the President, as the abolitionists use on all occasions. They are the original foes of the Union. Long before Jeff Davis had a thought of treason towards the Union, these abolitionists were plotting, night and day, for its destruction; and they now send out the infamous cry
from Boston— “LET THE UNION BE DISSOLVED IN GOD’S NAME ENGLAND OUGHT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY” This is the prayer of every abolitionist, except such as cherish the fiendish plan of cutting the throat of every white man, woman, and child in the South!"

Horatio Seymour, Governor and Statesman from New York, Jan. 1863.

John Brown had plotted the attack on the South for two years. Had shared the idea with other abolitionist, it was even leaked to Republican leaders but nobody stopped the plot. John Brown was attempting Civil War against the government of Virginia in Oct. of 1859. He planned to overthrow the government of a selected portion of Southern Territory and creat a new government, with its own constitution with him as its leader and his people as his cabinet. The official investegation of the raid did not finish until June of 1860, right in the middle of the election campaign.

Calls for South Carolina's disunion was held at an official convention earlier that year. During the highest point of Northern support for Brown and his family. His remains were treated as saintly and during it's move to its final resting place the papers covered it as if a fallen president was being laid to rest. John Brown was the victim of Virgina's laws was the Northern view and the abolitionist would not combine the actions with the actor; John Brown was acting in the name of God.
