I still believe the Horse Soldiers scene was derived from VMI at New Market. It simply would not do for John Wayne to fire on children. If the movie were made today, he probably WOULD fire, kill several boys, as actually happened at New Market, and suffer for it the rest of the movie.

There was a similar scene in Zulu. After the battle, roll call was held. The response to each name of the missing, was, I think, "Killed in action, Sir!" A large number of Victoria Crosses were won during the actual battle of Bork's Rift. Stan
