George, I have thought about this, and have concluded I missed out because I was never ship's company, but was aboard for the mission. Later, when the crew got awards, I was always missing, on another mission. I am now an honorary crew member of the USS Charles R. Ware, DD 865, having spent 43 days aboard on a little jaunt to the South Atlantic, which I suspect is still classified; another reason for missing out. I did have an ID card stipulating I reported to the Secretery of the Navy, and directing all Commanding Officers to cooperate in the performance of my duties. It came in handy sometimes. Stan
