Slavery in New England

I had read somewhere before, maybe in this forum, that the slave trade was so important to some new England States they would not ratify the Constitution of the US until slavery was included. Can someone point me to a source that verifies this or post that information? I looked for two hours last night without finding a source that list these states or the discussions that were had; I could only find references to "the importance of slave tradeā€ in the North. Any help and sources appreciated.

Thanks,

GP
