Re: The Alternative to CW - Lincoln's Position?

"The Blacks raised more money for this purpose than the Whites of the community, who were having a ball at the same time in a different location. As strange as that may sound between the blacks and the whites they raised over $1,500.00 in one night to equip that Company." Note that the Blacks and Whites had separate balls. Until fairly recently, there were instances of Black and White students having separate proms, as a matter of school policy.

"I heard one noted historian once comment that the difference between Northerners and Southerners in their attitudes towards Blacks is the the Northerners looked upon the Negro as a race and made their evaluations on the whole race. They detested the Negro himself as a person, but felt pity on the plight of the race. While the Southerner looked upon the Negro as an individual and treated him accordingly accord to his worth as an individual, but thought little of the Negro race as a whole."

There is an old colloquial corrollary to that statement: In the South, it doesn't matter how close Blacks get, as long as they don't get too high, while in the North, it doesn't matter how high Blacks get, as long as they don't get too close. Think about it.

A lot of us who grew up in the '40s and '50s had associations with Black playmates, nannies, and washerwomen, but there was a certain reserve to these relations. Usually, housing was segregated into different neighborhoods, and we went to segregated schools.

It was into the '60s before things changed very much. I do remember an instance in the early '50s, when a Black couple who had moved to Detroit came home for a family visit. I have no idea how my parents knew them, from before their move North, but they also visited us, and had dinner with us. I was proud of my parents for their attitude. Unfortunately, this incident sticks in my mind because it was unusual. What went on after the WTBS was not assimilation, as I understand the term. It has only been withn the past twenty five years or so where there has been anything you could call assimilation. It began in the armed forces when Harry Truman desegreated them. When I enlisted in the Navy in 1956 they were conducting classes in race relations, so we would all be Navy blue. Stan
