. . . and, it appears, we are, as you say, "so comfortable" only because cultural assimilation cannot be legislated, forced or otherwise made by man to happen. Considering, with exceptions, the marked cultural differences between blacks and whites that still existed in the 1860s, it seems the conclusion of this short thread is that cultural assimilation can only be accomplished as a consequence of the passage of (much) time under the circumstances where one race is culturally dominant over the other. Hmmmm . . . wonder if that is always true . . . I'm not sure.
