It was kind of a funny way they handled things. If one were a run a way from another territory or state, they could be free but if they were native born, they weren't unless freed by their master. I believe until the CW started, there were seperate thought patterns for East Florida and West Florida. They've never agreed on anything. Still don't.The escaped slaves were encouraged to go on down and join the Indians and they did. A large number of Indians that fought in the Indian Wars as Seminole, were former slaves and not Native Americans. Those who governed East Florida in St Augustine were less tolerant of free slaves running around.
