But the Southern school systems I attended promoted these northern historians views, and until recently, the histories written by Southerners only politely disagreed with the Northern dogma from at least the 1960s onward. This apparently has not always been the case. I have a book published in 1948 by a Northern historian, that I use frequently, on Lincoln's policies that explains his actions as illegal, unethical, and unconstitutional in very blunt terms. Why did we get off track? When did Lincoln become "our" national savior?
