In Response To: St. Patrick's Day ()

Stan,

Accourding to the 1790 census the amount of people who claimed to be of Irish nationality was low. Massachusetts was the largest northern state with a total population of 378,556 people,-3,793 claimed to be of Irish nationality. Virginia, Washington's state, had a total population of 747,550- 2,591 claimed to be of Irish nationality. Rhode Island, total population of 69,112, -Irish nationality 459. Pennsylvanis, of 433,611- 8,614 claimed to be of Irish nationality, but in Connecticut, total population 237,655, 223,437 claimed to be of English and Welsh nationality. How many of these Irish were Ulster Scots? Probably a very great many, since it was against the law for many years for Gaelic speaking-Irish Catholics to immigrate to the colonies. On the other hand, Scottish nationality claims were a great deal larger. Pennsylvania 49,567, North Carolina, 29,829, South Carolina, 16,447, Massachusetts, 13,375, Virginia, 9114, Maryland, 12,441 and so forth.
