In researching my genealogy, I found several Irish families immigrating in the 18th Century. Everyone of them were Ulstermen. As you said, that would be expected due to immigration laws. These people referred to themselves as Irish until the mid 19th Century when the Catholics came in droves. I believe that is when these Ulster-Irish began calling themselves Scots-Irish....to distinguish themselves from the "untouchables".
